The Creation of Meganeea
The scary-looking little guy you can see to the right is not only the first drawing of the first character I ever created, back when I was 13 years old. He is the one that started the story this website is all about; the first inhabitant of a world that would become quite populated. Here he appears crudely drawn on the cut-out back of a notebook cover, with hand-me-down colored pencils so worn out that some were less than an inch long at the time. I still have it after all these years.
I’ve been working on Meganeea since December, 1997. I have made numerous attempts at writing and illustrating this story, taking it in different directions with each try, hoping to find the one that was just right. Today, thirteen years later, the results of that effort are boxes and boxes full of character and story concept art, including two attempts at comic book versions (which you can see here and here) plot lines for several books, countless notes, a few maps and one manuscript that is now near 300 pages long.
The very first draft I wrote was somewhere around 200 pages long, and it was written in Spanish. I decided to abandon it and start all over in English shortly after I moved to the United States. Rather than translate what I had written, I began from scratch once again, keeping most of the same characters and locations, but changing the story and the relationship between the characters a great deal.
Now I’m bringing all my notes, maps and concept artwork together as I strive to create a final version. I made this blog because I would like to have a record of the progress of this project, which will hopefully see the light in the not-too-far future.
